Reading is a huge part of my life, and I’ve always advocated for reading at least 15 minutes of a self-improvement book every evening. So, when I decided to start my own business, my first stop was the bookstore.
Years later, I have a healthy pile of business books that have helped me create, organize, and scale my business beyond what I originally envisioned.
And now, it’s your turn.
In no particular order, here are my top 10 business books that will take your business to the next level. These are books that I’ve read and re-read, and they’re largely responsible for the success I have today.
I hope you enjoy these books as much as I did.
Profit First by Mike Michalowicz
In normal business finances, you pay your bills first and count anything leftover as “profit.” While that’s fine for some models, Profit First takes a different approach and teaches us that when we put our “profits first,” we learn to put our budget on a “diet” and do more with less. That way, your business is profitable from day one and you have a solid financial basis.
This book transformed my financial strategy by shifting my mindset towards prioritizing profit. It taught me to ensure economic stability while celebrating the profitability of my business.
Atomic Habits by James Clear
Another important factor in running and growing a business is knowing what to do with your time. Time is our most valuable asset, but it’s also the resource we tend to waste most on meaningless things. Atomic Habits changes that issue by teaching you which projects deserve your time, which to avoid, and how to make every moment productive.
This book opened my eyes to the incredible power of cultivating small habits. It showed me that consistent, incremental changes lead to remarkable results in both life and business.
The One Thing by Gary Keller
As a business owner, you’re no stranger to multitasking. However, studies show that multitasking prevents productivity, so it’s not as beneficial as it seems. Thankfully, That One Thing teaches you how to focus your energy on one thing at a time so you can cultivate a more productive, rewarding business.
The wisdom in this book emphasizes focus and productivity. It helped me discover the magic of simplicity in business and encouraged me to excel by doing one thing exceptionally well.
The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes
Though a bit outdated, this book will help you understand the nature of sales, see how it applies to your business, and give you the 12 key areas to focus on for maximum results.
This book became my ultimate guide to enhancing sales effectiveness and building enduring client relationships. Its strategies helped elevate my business to dominate the market and achieve long-term success.
Indistractable by Nir Eyal
Distractions are everywhere, and many businesses have fallen because of poor attention or misguided tangents. Thankfully, Indestractable is here to help you focus your attention with a four-step, research-backed model that will teach you how to get the most out of technology without letting it get the most of you.
The insights in this book taught me how to stay focused amidst distractions. As a result, mastering the art of concentration has taken my business to new heights of productivity.
Dotcom Secrets by Russell Brunson
If your website isn’t gaining enough traffic, or you want help with your internet marketing, Dotcom Secrets has all the answers. Dotcom Secrets will help you solve your existing problems, plus give you access to perfected marketing funnels and sales scripts that are guaranteed to bring a flood of new leads into your business.
I love this book, and it was one of the first real game-changers I read. It helped me understand marketing funnels and how they weren’t the overwhelming monster I’d made them out to be.
7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
This holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach to solving personal and professional problems will help you navigate relationships and develop habits that will make you a stronger entrepreneur, team leader, and overall person.
This book completely changed how I saw myself as a business person, and I’ve tried to adapt these habits in one way or another. You’ll be amazed at the difference it’s made in my business and life in the last seven years.
How to Talk to Anyone By Leil Lowndes
If you’re shy or introverted, then networking is a complete nightmare. Reading this book can help you break your shell and find the right words to advance your business relationships.
It helped me come up with new questions and unique topics. It also taught me how to start conversations, which I’m not naturally good at. Still, it’s amazing how far you can get if you learn how to talk to people.
The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss
It can be draining when you have all the responsibilities on your shoulders, which is why I recommend reading the Four-Hour Workweek. This book will teach you about creating processes, lessening the workload while increasing your output, and outsourcing when needed. It is a fabulous resource to remind you that you don’t have to do it alone. Unfortunately, some methods are outdated, but the book will still give you a base for streamlining your business.
When I read this book, it completely changed the way I thought about my business and how much I had to do. That’s when I began automating things, creating processes, and finding the right team members to fill the gaps.
Traction by Gino Wickman
Traction is the ultimate “take control of your business” book, and it does that by outlining the six key components of your business. Then, it’ll tell you how to strengthen them for maximum productivity, enjoyment, and growth.
Traction helped me understand how the visionary and the integer worked together to run and scale a company. It also taught me how to make a better EOS model that can make a business thrive.
Final Thoughts
You may have already read a few of these books, or they may be brand-new suggestions. Either way, reading these books will help your business grow by making you a stronger, more confident business owner.
